Guns Used for Crime Come from out of State

The state of New Jersey has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. They are in place to keep innocent people safe from accidental injury or death and to make sure only responsible people have access to guns.

Knowing this, it makes sense that recent data unveiled by the state’s governor shows that 77 percent of guns used in crimes in New Jersey during the first quarter of the year came from outside the state.

It was revealed that 83 firearms recovered in crimes had been purchased from Pennsylvania. Dozens of others were originally purchased in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia.

The report on the guns was revealed as part of the governor’s effort at tightening the state’s already-strict firearms law.

Weapons Charges Incur Serious Penalties

As it stands, if you get charged with a crime while using a weapon in New Jersey, you will end up facing aggravated criminal charges, which come with mandatory sentencing. A gun charge without committing a crime can still result in serious penalties like prison time and fines. In addition, you may lose your right to carry a gun.

One of the more common weapons charges in New Jersey is possession of a gun without a permit to carry. This is considered a second degree crime and under the Graves Act means a minimum term of five years in state jail without eligibility for parole for three years.

If you were found to in possession of an assault weapon it is also a second degree crime. It could mean 10 years in prison and up to $150,000 in fines.

At the end of the day, any type of weapons charge will be detrimental to your reputation and be a permanent stain on your record. This will make it difficult to find a job, rent a home or apartment or lead a normal life. If you are facing weapons charges in New Jersey you will need the aid of an experienced criminal defense attorney.
